Description
The white house is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. The house was designed by Irish born James Hoban, and built between 1772 and 1800, it has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams. It is made up of six stories, as well as a two-story basement, 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, 3 elevators, 5 full-time chefs, a tennis court, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a jogging track, a swimming pool, and a putting green and it receives about 5,000 visitors a day.
The property is owned by the National Park Service, its grounds cover over 18 acres. In 2007, it was ranked second on the American Institute of Architects list of "America's Favorite Architecture." Today the group of buildings housing the presidency is known as the White House Complex. It includes the central Executive Residence flanked by the East Wing and West Wing where the President's office (the Oval Office) is.
