Description

The Washington Monument is an obelisk near the west end of the National Mall in Washington D,C., built to commemorate the first U.S
president General George Washington. The monument is made of marble, granite, and sandstone. It is the world's tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk in world, standing 555ft. It is the tallest structure in Washington, DC. It was designed by Robert Mills. The actual construction began in 1848 but was not completed until 1884. Fifty flags surround the base of the monument symbolizing the 50 states of America.
From 1998 to 2000, the Washington Monument was restored and a new information center was built just below the information deck. In 2005, a new wall was constructed around the monument to improve security.
Sylvan Theater, an outdoor amphitheater located near the base of the Washington Monument, is a popular venue for a wide range of events including free concerts and live theatrical performances,commemorative ceremonies, rallies and protests.
